Hartington is a mid-terrace Georgian house built around 1840, four storeys, in the Lansdowne Gardens Conservation Area. Over the years it had been divided into small dark rooms. The brief was to modernise it without losing its character.

What we have built in Stockwell

Every floor was opened up to the large windows at the front and rear, from lower ground to second floor. ING Architects did the architecture and Malin & Lynn ran design, tender and interiors.

On the raised ground floor the wall between the reception room and the hallway came out, and a large Crittall screen from Fabco Sanctuary went in its place. A rear reception room in a house like this can end up a corridor, so the screen divides the space without losing the width or the light, and daylight from the rear window now reaches the hall and the original stair. That room is painted Green Smoke, level with the trees at either end of the house, with the 25-metre garden beyond it.

We retained and refurbished the original staircase, sanding, treating and repainting its handrails and spindles, then adding half-height panelling and a bespoke runner.

At the end of the garden we built a studio. Malin & Lynn designed it as a work-from-home space, with a bedroom and a shower room, and it is clad in anthracite zinc.

The house is in the Lansdowne Gardens Conservation Area, so the garden studio needed planning approval before it could be built.
