Builders in Putney

Howard's Lane is in the West Putney conservation area, rebuilt floor by floor and extended at the rear. We went back to the same house three years later to dig the basement.

Homes here

Howard’s Lane sits in the West Putney conservation area, a family house built for a couple with four children. Another published Putney project combined a 2,500-square-foot house renovation with work to its 100-foot garden.

On one Putney project the original stained-glass front doors were put on the skip during the works; a specialist stained-glass artisan brought them back instead.

What we have built in Putney

EMR Architecture reconfigured every floor and every room of Howard’s Lane. Only the original staircase stayed. At the rear, an extension of 65 square metres holds the living, kitchen and dining space, with sliding doors 2.7 metres tall and 7 metres wide, and an oriel window on the side to pick up more daylight. A new garage went up as well, sized for the family’s ten bicycles and the plant room.

The Independent featured the house. Three years later we were back on site for the same clients, digging out a basement of 70 square metres: a media room, a guest bedroom and en-suite, a cloakroom and a wine cellar.

On one Putney house the threshold to the garden is completely flush, with a blade drain, so there is nothing to trip on, and the rear patio stones are large ones. In a child’s bedroom the built-in joinery was spray finished to match the wall colour, which takes the visual bulk out of it. An en-suite has a full wet-room floor with underfloor heating, and electric heating in the walls of the shower area as well.

Planning and the street

Howard’s Lane has an oriel window on the side. It projects from the face of the building, bringing more daylight into the room and adding a small amount of usable space.

In the loft we built a dormer that EMR describe as a first for the local planning authority.
